History & Significance

Roger Mortimer of Wigmore was Edward's principal ally in the marches. Immediately after Edward's escape from Hereford, Mortimer provided horses, men, and support at Wigmore Castle. This junction was the starting point of the royalist military recovery. Mortimer's Welsh March resources were essential for the rapid campaign that followed and he personally commanded the forces that destroyed Simon junior at Kenilworth.
