The Battle

History & Significance

Edward I besieged Stirling Castle in the spring of 1304 in the last major siege of the First Scottish War. The castle was the last significant Scottish strongpoint. Edward deployed twelve siege engines including the great trebuchet Warwolf. When the garrison offered to surrender before Warwolf was complete, Edward refused, insisting on testing his machine. The bombardment reduced the castle walls and forced unconditional surrender.
