History & Significance

Angus Mor of Islay, the most powerful of the MacSorley lords and ancestor of Clan Donald, submitted to Alexander III in 1264 and was confirmed in his island lordships. His submission was the key political act in the Scottish consolidation of the Hebrides. Angus Mor received Islay in return for homage and became the foundation of the MacDonald claim to the Lordship of the Isles.
