Tyndrum at the head of Strath Fillan was a vital crossroads in the western Highlands, where the routes to Argyll, Breadalbane and the western Highlands all met. In 1689, the control of this junction was contested. The Earl of Breadalbane maintained ambiguous control of the surrounding country. Jacobite forces from Lochaber occasionally pushed through Tyndrum seeking to operate against government-held Argyll. Government forces from the Argyll Campbells probed northward through Tyndrum toward the Jacobite-held Breadalbane country. The village changed hands or was threatened several times during the 1689 campaign as both sides recognised its strategic importance as a gateway between west and central Scotland.
