History & Significance

Appleby Castle in Westmorland was besieged and taken by Scottish forces under William the Lion during his 1173-74 invasion. The fall of Appleby opened the Eden valley to Scottish raiding and demonstrated the vulnerability of the northern borders when the royal garrison was stripped to deal with troubles elsewhere. The castle was recovered after William's capture at Alnwick.
