The Battle

History & Significance

Dover Castle was one of Stephen's most strategically vital holdings during the Anarchy. Its control of the shortest Channel crossing meant that whoever held Dover could receive troops, money and supplies from Normandy or block them. Stephen ensured Dover remained loyal throughout the civil war, which limited Matilda's ability to receive direct continental aid and reinforcements. The castle constables of Dover were among Stephen's most trusted supporters.
