History & Significance

The Jacobite invasion of England via the western route — led by Thomas Forster and the Scots lord Kenmure — ended in surrender at Preston when surrounded by government forces. Kenmure and the English leader Derwentwater were executed. The disaster ended any hope of a Jacobite rising in the north of England and left the 1715 rising dependent on Scotland alone.
