History & Significance

The Yorkist Simnel rebellion of 1487 involved a substantial force of Irish Kerns and German Landsknechts marching through Leicestershire on their way from the north-west to the battle at Stoke Field. The army under Lincoln and the Earl of Kildare passed through the Midlands gathering recruits and foraging, with minor clashes with Henry VII\'s local supporters. The failure to attract major English support and the subsequent decisive defeat at Stoke Field ended the last serious challenge to the Tudor dynasty.

Forces Involved

Simnel: c.8,000 Irish kerns and German Landsknechts plus English Yorkist adherents. Local: Henry VII\'s Midlands loyalists
