History & Significance

In the campaign of 1296, Stirling Castle was taken by Edward I almost without resistance — the garrison fled on his approach. This gave Edward control of the key crossing of the Forth and completed his rapid conquest. The next year William Wallace would drive the English out at Stirling Bridge.
