The Battle

History & Significance

James IV compelled John MacDonald III to submit and forfeit the Lordship of the Isles to the Scottish crown. Though technically a legal and political act rather than a battle, the forfeiture was accompanied by naval expeditions and military pressure along the west coast. The end of the Lordship ended six generations of near-independent MacDonald rule over the Hebrides and set off decades of MacDonald rebellions as various claimants tried to restore it.
