Dalnacardoch in Highland Perthshire was an important staging post on the military road built by General Wade from Dunkeld to Dalwhinnie. Government supply convoys using this route were vulnerable to Jacobite interception in the autumn of 1745 as the Jacobite army occupied central Perthshire. Jacobite parties ambushed a government supply convoy near Dalnacardoch, capturing horses, provisions and military stores. The disruption of the Wade road supply chain forced government forces to use more expensive and slower sea-routes to supply garrisons in the Highlands. Control of the Wade roads was a persistent operational concern throughout the 1745 campaign.
