History & Significance

Wallace's killing of William de Heselrig, the English Sheriff of Lanark, is traditionally associated with the murder of Wallace's wife or beloved Marion Braidfute. Whether this specific motivation is historical, the killing of the sheriff in May 1297 was Wallace's first act of open rebellion. It brought him to prominence and began his rapid rise as a leader of resistance. From this point the rising spread rapidly through southern Scotland.
