The Battle

History & Significance

The most significant battle of the Anarchy in Yorkshire. Archbishop Thurstan of York organised the English defence around a cart bearing the banners of St Cuthbert, St Peter of York, St John of Beverley, and St Wilfrid of Ripon — the 'Standard'. The English levies defeated David I's heterogeneous army, including the feared Galwegian warriors, in a fierce battle. The victory prevented Scottish permanent occupation of Yorkshire.

Casualties & Losses

Thousands of Scots killed; Yorkshire sources claim 10,000
