The Battle

History & Significance

Bernard de Neufmarche completed his conquest of Brycheiniog and killed the last independent king of south Wales, Rhys ap Tewdwr, near Brecon. Bernard had been campaigning in Breconshire since the early 1070s, building a castle at Brecon and systematically dispossessing the Welsh ruling family. The killing of Rhys ap Tewdwr opened all of south Wales to Norman conquest within a single campaign season.
