The ford at Clackmannan was one of the upper Forth crossings that gave access to the heart of Scotland. Holding it denied the English the ability to reinforce or resupply their positions in central Scotland. The engagement was part of the guerrilla warfare around the Forth line during the Second War of Independence, where the river crossings were as important as any castle.
