The Battle

History & Significance

The MacKenzies of Kintail remained Jacobite sympathisers throughout the 1689-92 Highland war and maintained sporadic resistance in the remote mountains of Wester Ross long after most other clans had submitted. Government columns rarely penetrated this territory. The fourth Earl of Seaforth, chief of the MacKenzies, was in exile with King James but his clansmen maintained a posture of defiant non-cooperation with the government. This residual MacKenzie resistance in Wester Ross was the precursor to their enthusiastic participation in the 1719 Glenshiel campaign.
