History & Significance

The last hold-outs of the baronial cause took refuge in the Isle of Ely under John d Eyville and others. They used the Fens as a natural fortress. Henry III's government had to combine military pressure with the mediation of Gilbert de Clare to achieve a settlement. The Ely resistance ended the First Barons War definitively.
