The Battle

History & Significance

Henry FitzEmpress's 1149 visit to England was more substantial than his 1142 trip, and he was knighted by his great-uncle David I of Scotland at Carlisle. Henry attempted to coordinate operations with David I against Stephen but the campaign achieved nothing decisive. Stephen moved against him and Henry withdrew, but the visit established important contacts and demonstrated that the Angevin heir was maturing into a serious military force.
