The Battle

History & Significance

One of the strangest events in Scottish history — a judicial combat between thirty men from Clan Chattan and thirty from Clan Cameron (Kay) fought before Robert III on the North Inch of Perth. The clans had been feuding for years; the king ordered this spectacle to settle it. Only twelve survived. One Chattan fighter sold his place to a Perth burgess named Hal o' the Wynd — immortalised in Scott's "The Fair Maid of Perth".
