Hugh Bigod held both Framlingham and Bungay castles during the revolt against Henry II. Royal forces besieged Bungay as part of the strategy to contain the rebellion in East Anglia. Henry II's return from France and swift military action forced the surrender of Bigod's castles. Bungay was slighted after its capture as punishment.
