History & Significance

Reginald de Braose, lord of Brecon and Builth, conducted aggressive campaigns against Welsh lords in Radnorshire in the 1190s as the death of the Lord Rhys weakened Welsh unity in the south. The de Braose family exploited every period of Welsh weakness to extend their Marcher power. Several Welsh lords were dispossessed or forced into submission during the campaign. The de Braose family reached the apex of their power in the Marches in this period before their catastrophic fall under King John.
