History & Significance

In one of Lord Rhys's last great campaigns (he died 1197), he defeated Roger Mortimer near Radnor and captured several castles. After King Henry II's death, Rhys resumed aggressive operations against the Marcher Lords. The victory at Radnor was part of this late flourishing of Welsh power. Rhys's death in 1197 left Deheubarth to be divided among his many quarrelsome sons, weakening it fatally.
