History & Significance

After defeating the Comyns at Barra, Bruce systematically destroyed the Earldom of Buchan — burning crops, livestock, and settlements across the entire region. The "Herschip" (harrying) was so thorough that Buchan reportedly depopulated for a generation. Bruce's deliberate destruction of a powerful enemy territory is one of the most brutal acts of the Wars of Independence.
