History & Significance

While Richard I was imprisoned in Germany by Duke Leopold, Prince John seized several royal castles and allied with Philip II of France. Windsor Castle, one of the Crown jewels of English royal power, was held against John by loyal constables. Its resistance helped preserve the kingdom for the returning Crusader king.
