The Battle

History & Significance

The MacLeod of Lewis lords raided the Gairloch area of Wester Ross from their Lewis base in the mid-fourteenth century, establishing a presence on the mainland coast that would be contested with the Mackenzies for over a century. Gairloch with its sheltered harbour was valuable for the MacLeod of Lewis who needed mainland bases for their galley fleet operations.
