The Battle

History & Significance

While Haakon IV's main fleet was at Largs, detachments raided along the Scottish coast. A force penetrated the Moray Firth and landed near Kessock at the entrance to the Beauly Firth opposite Inverness. Local Scottish forces resisted. The raids demonstrated the reach of Norwegian naval power but also showed that Scotland could contest Norse operations even in the north. Haakon's failure at Largs shortly after ended the campaign.
