The Battle

History & Significance

After the Anarchy ended with the accession of Henry II, several castellans refused to surrender castles they had held throughout the civil war. Henry II besieged Bridgnorth Castle in Shropshire in 1155 as part of his systematic recovery of castles occupied by powerful lords. The new king s swift action showed his determination to reassert royal control over the kingdom, and Bridgnorth surrendered rapidly.
