Norman forces burned communities throughout the Tyne valley as William extended the Harrying into Northumberland in the winter of 1069-1070. The destruction of settlements along the Tyne severed the main route between York and Scotland and eliminated the agricultural base of the most northerly English territory. The Tyne burning was part of the deliberate creation of a wasteland buffer zone between Norman England and the Scottish border.
