The Battle

History & Significance

Bruce personally led a night assault on Perth — wading through the moat with water to his neck, testing the depth himself. His men followed. The garrison was taken by surprise. This is the event Barbour's "The Bruce" describes in vivid detail — the king leading from the front, armour and all, through freezing water. Perth's walls were demolished to prevent reuse.
