The Battle

History & Significance

Kenilworth Castle served as Simon de Montfort\'s principal stronghold during the 1265 campaign. After de Montfort\'s defeat and death at Evesham in August 1265, the garrison — including his son — continued to hold out in what became the longest siege in English medieval history (1266). The castle\'s artificial lake and massive earthworks made it virtually impregnable. The Dictum of Kenilworth (1266) eventually offered terms to the rebels, ending the resistance.

Forces Involved

Baronial garrison: de Montfort family and adherents. Royalist: Prince Edward\'s forces during the 1265 campaign
