History & Significance

Shortly after Methven in 1306, Bruce and his much-reduced force were ambushed by the MacDougalls of Lorn at Dal Righ near Tyndrum. The MacDougalls, kinsmen of the murdered Comyn and hostile to Bruce, attacked his rearguard as he withdrew westward. Bruce reportedly fought his way free personally, losing his brooch in the struggle — the Brooch of Lorn, later a clan treasure. The Dal Righ ambush further reduced Bruce's following and forced him to scatter his companions before taking refuge on Rathlin Island.
