The Earl of Breadalbane played an ambiguous role in the 1689 rising. His Campbell clansmen controlled the Breadalbane country south of the main Jacobite zone, and Jacobite raiding parties swept through the Aberfeldy area. Government supply columns and patrol parties were vulnerable in this rugged terrain. Breadalbane himself later negotiated the bribe payments to Highland chiefs known as the Glencoe money — his double-dealing eventually led indirectly to the Glencoe Massacre.
