History & Significance

During the 1715 rising, the Jacobites under Mar held Perthshire while the government held Stirling Castle and the Forth crossings. Jacobite cavalry attempts to probe the Stirling position and find alternative crossings were repelled in a series of skirmishes around the Bridge of Allan area. The inability to cross the Forth contributed to the strategic stalemate that doomed the rising.
