The most crushing English victory of the reconquest period. A Northumbrian Danish army that had raided into Mercia was caught at Tettenhall by the combined forces of Edward and his brother-in-law Aethelred of Mercia. Danish kings Halfdan and Eowils were killed along with a large part of the Northumbrian Danish nobility. This disaster effectively ended Danish military capacity in Northumbria for a generation and opened the way for the reconquest.
