The Battle

History & Significance

James Douglas, operating out of Selkirk Forest from 1307 onward, conducted a sustained guerrilla campaign against English garrisons and patrols in Lanarkshire, Douglasdale and the surrounding forests. In multiple ambushes Douglas's small force destroyed English supply parties and isolated garrisons, preventing the English from maintaining effective control over the forest regions. These operations kept a corridor of resistance alive in the south and prevented English forces from concentrating entirely against Bruce in the north.
