Portchester Castle on Portsmouth Harbour was besieged by French and baronial forces during Louis of France's campaign to control southern England. The great Roman shore fort held a royalist garrison. The siege was one of many that stretched French resources across southern England. Portchester's eventual fall opened Portsmouth Harbour to French naval use.
