Flodden was Scotland's greatest military catastrophe. James IV — the last British monarch killed in battle — led his army down from Flodden Edge to fight in the valley, abandoning his superior position. Surrey's English billmen and the long reach of their bills proved decisive against Scottish spears. The flower of Scottish nobility was destroyed in an afternoon
