The Battle

History & Significance

Henry Percy (Hotspur) raised his Northumbrian retinue for his rebellion against Henry IV in 1403, marching south through Yorkshire to join with Owen Glendower and Douglas. His rapid march caught Henry IV off-guard. The two armies met at Shrewsbury where Hotspur was killed. His death ended the most dangerous challenge to Henry IV and left his father Northumberland — who had failed to join the rising — to face the king's wrath. The recruitment in Northumberland illustrates the military power the Percy family could raise from their northern estates.
