The Battle

History & Significance

Hugh of Avranches, Earl of Chester, mounted an aggressive campaign into Gwynedd in the 1070s using Robert of Rhuddlan as his instrument. Hugh pushed Norman power as far as the Conwy River and established castle bases at Rhuddlan and later Deganwy. Welsh resistance in Gwynedd was fierce but fragmented. Several skirmishes in the Snowdonia foothills were fought as Welsh forces attempted to check the Norman advance.
