The Battle

History & Significance

The battle that saved England from French conquest. William Marshal, aged around 70, led the Royalist force through a gate the French had left unguarded. Fighting through the streets of Lincoln became so chaotic — and so much plunder was taken — it was mockingly called the "Fair of Lincoln." Several hundred prisoners were taken; the rebel cause in the Midlands collapsed. Combined with the naval victory at Sandwich two months later, it ended the war.

Casualties & Losses

Hundreds captured; few killed in the street fighting
