The Battle

History & Significance

The 1380s saw a renewal of serious Scottish raiding into England, partly encouraged by French diplomatic pressure on England. These raids culminated in the campaign that led to the Battle of Otterburn in 1388. The Percy family, as Wardens of the March, were responsible for defence but were chronically under-resourced and often at loggerheads with the crown about funding.
