History & Significance

After Owain Gwynedd's death in 1170, his sons fought ferociously for the succession. At the Battle of Pentraeth on Anglesey, Dafydd ab Owain defeated and blinded his brother Rhodri. The brutal internecine conflict that followed Owain's death weakened Gwynedd severely before Llywelyn the Great eventually consolidated power in the early thirteenth century.
