The Battle

History & Significance

Robert de Rhuddlan, operating from his base at Rhuddlan Castle built on the site of the earlier Welsh palace, conducted a series of aggressive raids deep into Gwynedd that temporarily brought much of north Wales under nominal Norman suzerainty. His raids exploited the weakness of the Welsh princes following the death of Bleddyn ap Cynfyn and briefly extended Norman authority to the shores of the Menai Strait. His ambition outran Norman strategic capacity in the region.
