History & Significance

Despite earlier campaigns, Argyll remained restive and Alexander II mounted another significant military operation there in 1235. The western highlands were difficult terrain and the local lords had centuries of experience in resisting central authority. This campaign resulted in another submission, though Scottish control remained contested until after the Treaty of Perth in 1266 when Norway ceded the Hebrides.
