History & Significance

The MacKenzies of Seaforth, on whose home territory the 1719 rising was fought, were among the most committed Jacobite clans. The fifth Earl of Seaforth led his men and those of neighbouring clans through the mountains of Kintail toward Glenshiel. Government scouts from Inverness attempted to monitor the MacKenzie assembly but were driven off by MacKenzie skirmishers who knew every path through the mountains. The Seaforth MacKenzies formed the left wing of the Jacobite force at Glenshiel and fought with considerable determination before the rising collapsed.
