Edward Prince of Wales, the sole heir of Henry VI, was killed at or immediately after the Battle of Tewkesbury on 4 May 1471, either in the rout or in the aftermath. His death extinguished the direct Lancastrian line and made the murder of Henry VI shortly after a foregone political necessity. Accounts differ on whether he died in battle or was executed after capture.
