The Battle

History & Significance

Robert Duke of Albany mounted a second expedition into the Highland zone in 1401, this time pushing further north toward Dingwall and Ross to assert royal governance in the aftermath of the capture of James I by the English. Albany used his dual role as Governor and regent to extend Stewart authority into the Highlands through a combination of force and grants to cooperative chiefs. The expedition demonstrated the continuing difficulty of imposing Lowland governance on the Highland clans.
