The Battle

History & Significance

Alexander II took advantage of the Magna Carta crisis and the rebellion against King John to invade northern England and press Scottish claims to Northumberland. He allied with the rebel barons and raided deep into the north. His forces even marched south to Dover to do homage to the rebel-backed Louis of France as King of England. The campaign was ultimately unsuccessful when Louis was defeated after John's death, but showed Alexander's willingness to exploit English weakness.
