History & Significance

After the Battle of Dunkeld in August 1689, the defeated Jacobite Highland force dispersed into the surrounding countryside. There was sporadic skirmishing as government cavalry pursued the Highlanders through Perthshire. The Cameronians' successful defence of Dunkeld and this follow-up mopping-up effectively ended the military threat of the 1689 rising in the south, leaving only the Highland clans further north to be dealt with.
