Nesbit Moor in 1355 was one of the few English successes in the border warfare of the 1350s. A Scottish raiding force was caught and defeated, several of its leaders captured. The English victory was exploited by Edward III who used it as justification for a retaliatory campaign — the Burnt Candlemas of early 1356 — in which he devastated Lothian. The Scots could not effectively resist the English army in the field but recovered quickly once it withdrew.
